A pretty lovely QT where MC and ML are both pitiful and find happiness with each other. MC is supposedly there to protect our ML with a “tragic cannon fodder fate”, but this story is one where they basically protect each other.
This is a story that feels full of emotional drama. No, none of that abuse, face slapping, angst and whatever. MC and ML are both very principled and dedicated to each other. It’s just that their pasts, their future (perceived at that time) and their moments together just…I don’t know how to put it…but it felt so precious in the face of difficulty.
MC, ML and their relationship
MC seems like a fairly normal young man who’s studying for exams (to be employed by the main system). He seems a bit naive, rather trusting but overall lovely. He’s sent to help various cannon fodder, and in his very first world he meets ML. I’m not sure at what point, maybe ML realised it first, but MC definitely seemed like a person of few words, naive but surprisingly strong. He has a difficult past too, but it’s revealed super slowly.
ML is considered a cannon fodder of his world storyline, though tbh more like a background character who pushes the plot forward through heroic sacrifice. He is a native in the original world, who decides to keep a lover to hide his motives from his enemies/allies. He’s on thin ice because he has to play nice with his enemies who don’t trust him much, while his allies think he’s a traitor. Basically, he’s a lonely soul…until he meets our MC.
Anyway, they both dote each other! MC looks after ML plot-wise, ML dotes on MC as well. There were some real rocky lows in the first world (not MC or ML’s fault, it’s just that so many people want ML’s life) so I needed a tissue for my crocodile tears.
I really like how moments from their first life continue to peek through the rest of the story, and some parts of their final mini-world/trial kinda paralleled back to the promise in their first life together (actually, kinda to most of the other worlds too).
The system & the QT
The system doesn’t really play a huge role, at the start it warned rather feebly against ML’s sinister intentions and continued to be a bit iffy about ML kidnapping MC. MC kinda just laughs it off and buys stuff for the system. So overall…the system’s role was kinda like a mascot, though there were definitely points were the system helps quite a bit!
The mini-worlds in the QT weren’t super imaginative or out-there crazy, which is fine. I’d prefer it if the MC & ML lived their full lifetime in the mini-worlds rather than leaving the world after completing the task and fading to obscurity. However…they do leave together, so I think it’s an acceptable alternative.
Conclusion
This story is very wholesome. It’s a bit slow paced because both MC and ML are calm people (not the face-slapping type story). Many bits were definitely felt very emotional and both characters have pretty tragic pasts so it’s not the most lighthearted story out there. But…their story is a healing one, yeah, a two-way redemption. Very satisfied and happy for them to be together!
